The earlier we can introduce social-emotional learning, the better! Starting at 1.5 years old, these skills are crucial to the overall development of children. Through playful activities, storytelling, and guided interactions, children are encouraged to explore and understand their emotions, develop a sense of empathy, and practice basic social skills such as taking turns and communicating needs effectively. Moreover, SEL standards for this age group prioritize creating safe and supportive environments where children feel valued, respected, and empowered to express themselves authentically.

Elementary

During this period, children are expanding their social circles, developing a stronger sense of self, and encountering more complex social situations. SEL standards for this age group typically encompass a range of skills and competencies aimed at promoting self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

Middle School

At this age, children are navigating the challenging terrain of adolescence. By integrating SEL into their education, middle schoolers gain vital skills for understanding and managing their emotions, building empathy, and fostering healthy relationships. SEL programs provide opportunities for students to develop self-awareness, self-regulation, and responsible decision-making, empowering them to navigate academic and social challenges more effectively. Additionally, SEL equips middle schoolers with essential life skills such as effective communication, conflict resolution, and goal setting, laying a strong foundation for their future success and well-being.

High School

High school students benefit immensely from social-emotional learning (SEL) as they face increased academic demands, social pressures, and personal challenges. SEL equips them with essential skills to navigate these complexities effectively. By fostering self-awareness, emotional regulation, and resilience, SEL empowers students to manage stress, anxiety, and peer relationships more adeptly. Furthermore, SEL programs promote empathy, communication, and teamwork, crucial for building strong interpersonal connections and navigating diverse social environments. As high schoolers develop these skills, they not only enhance their academic performance but also lay the groundwork for success in higher education, careers, and personal relationships beyond graduation.
